Kintsugi "金継ぎ" is the act of repairing broken pottery with a form of lacquer that is then dusted with gold. This makes the piece worth more than it was originally worth. It's purpose is to show the damage to the pottery. The act of breaking the pottery is considered as part of it's history and honors it rather than hiding it.
The history behind it supposedly goes that the eighth Ashikaga Shogun set away his favorite tea bowl to China for repairs. It was returned to him with staples, which he found displeasing and ordered an alternative more aesthetically pleasing repair method to be found.
